HIS STORY..........
I don't think any of us ever realized when we started Better Homes, Incorporated ("B.H.I."), back in 1975 how far we would go in providing affordable housing for those who need it.
In just two decades, our group of interested citizens went from begging Bristol Township to put up $20,000 to buy and rehab a house to taking part in the construction of 600 units of affordable housing near Doylestown.
During that period, Better Homes spread its wings and instituted a variety of programs to achieve its goal of providing decent housing for as many people as possible.
We serve people in many ways. If we do not have any vacancies in our program we see if we can place an applicant elsewhere in either an apartment or a shelter. We also provide counseling.
To be eligible for our low- income plan, an applicant must meet the federal guidelines which are on a sliding scale depending on how many people are in the family. The scale is adjusted annually.
All of the effort we have put into our program is worthwhile when we see how happy the people are when they move into their unit-either through purchase or rental. many of them thought they would never see the day. We help people "fulfill the American Dream" by having a place they can call their own. It is very satisfying work.
With a success story like ours, you might think the board of directors is made up of top CEOs of leading corporations. Actually, the board that has guided BHI to these heights are residents of the community we serve and many of them meet the federal government's test as low income people.
