Better Homes, Inc.
BHI's mission is to stabilize lower income communities through the rehabilitation of vacant and deteriorated houses. It is our desire to allow very low-income tenants to become homeowners and to provide high-quality housing to low and moderate income residents of Bucks County. Better Homes Inc. of Bucks County was incorporated in 1975. The organization was formed as the affordable housing component of the Kingswood Betterment Society, Inc. BHI is a Community Housing Development Organization. BHI uses a combination of bank financing, public and private foundation grants and loans to acquire, rehabilitate and sell or rent some of the area's most devastated homes. Our target projects include fire damaged, storm damaged, abandoned and dilapidated properties. In the case of re-sales, BHI assists lower-income residents by subsidizing the sale of the property.
BHI has been a developer of affordable housing for over 33 years. BHI has rehabilitated and sold nearly 100 homes and has an inventory of nearly 60 family rental units, including three Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, Multi-family apartment complexes. BHI's long record of success is in part a result of its commitment to the communities it serves. BHI was the first CHDO in the Bucks County area. Our Board of Directors are primarily community members, who in most cases meet the federal government's test as low income families. Currently, over 80% of BHI's Board of Directors have served on the Board for almost 30 years!
BHI plans to continue its affordable housing development and supplement those activities with service enriched housing. Placing lower income residents into homes should be complemented by offering a support system, which informs lower income residents of service and opportunities available throughout the county, all designed to enhance the quality of life for residents.
